Peace Cup 2009 - Andalucia.
KAM Sports International confirms the latest addition to the 2009 Peace Cup are Potuguese elite club FC Porto. They join Italian giants Juventus, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Olympique Lyon and 2008 Copa Libertadores winners Liga de Quito and Saudi Champions Saudi Al Ittihad for the 2009 Peace Cup – Andalucia.
This week it has been announced by the Peace Cup that Scottish Champions for 2008/9 will also be invited to participate. The two contenders are giants Celtic and Rangers.
"The Peace Cup wants the SPL winners to take part," KAM Sports International's Michael D'Arcy told The Scotsman.
"Celtic are currently in the driving seat, but we will have to wait until the end of the season to see what happens. Discussions are taking place with both clubs, but nothing has been contracted. I believe both clubs are talking it over with their head coaches before making any final decision."
The Peace Cup 2009 will hopefully see the first Scottish club participate not least because of the magnificent support of both sets of fans who travel and create wonderful atmospheres in venues across Europe. As Andalucia is a fantastic tourist destination, it is likely that football will form part of many family holidays this year in Spain!
As the tournament continues to growl, clubs from countries that have not recently participated, now see the technical, social and commercial benefits in taking part in the biggest club tournament in the World. (All proceeds will be donated to social welfare projects that assist youth.)
Juventus is the first Italian club to play in the Peace Cup. Having won 51 trophies, including 27 Serie-A titles they are one of the historic clubs in world football. Remarkably, the club has conquered all three major European club tournaments – Champions League, UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup – the first in Europe to do so.
This is the first time the biggest intercontinental club tournament in the world has been staged outside Korea.
The invitation to the Premier League clubs, which will compete with the Asian, South American and European opponents for the right to be named Peace Cup 2009 Champions has been made. Over the next few weeks, many of top clubs in the England will be making plans for pre-season. However, with Champions League qualification and managerial changes affecting decisions about pre-season, there isn't a history of clubs making early choices.
KAM Sports International will announce which Premier League club will participate in the 12 team tournament – due to be televised across the globe.
The Peace Cup 2009 will start next July 24th and will end August 2. Tickets will be available to the club's fans.
Prize Money for the winners is Euros 2,000,000 and for the runners up - Euros 1,000,000
Real Madrid Sporting Director, Pedja Mijatovic explained why Real Madrid wanted to participate in the tournament.
"Real Madrid have always wanted to participate in tournaments that promote fundamental campaigns such as peace and the fight against poverty.”
We assessed both the social and sports impact it could have. Real Madrid are always ready to lend a hand, and this is a great chance to send a message of world peace; a cause Real Madrid has always taken to heart.”
“Additionally, these matches against prominent clubs such as Olympiqe Lyon and Sevilla, will help us prepare for the following season. Preseasons are always important, and being able to play these matches here in Spain is an excellent opportunity for us. All the pieces came together for Real Madrid to play in this tournament."
The first Peace Cup was held in 2003 and has taken place biennially ever since.
The 2007 tournament saw Premier League representatives Bolton and Reading take part, (KAM Sports International acting for both) with Bolton narrowly missing out in the $2.5m final to Lyon.
Next summer's tournament will be the first held outside South Korea. Madrid, Huelva, Sevilla, Jerez and Malaga will host matches the matches. All proceeds will be donated to social welfare projects that assist youth. To see more about the Peace Dream Foundation
