Amalgam
•More than 150 years old
•
Used in all operative sites about 30 years ago (anterior & Posterior)
•
Today primary application in dentistry is for the restoration of posterior
•
Use in more than 75% of direct posterior restorations today.
•Amalgam :
An alloy of mercury with another metal or metals.
•
Dental amalgam:
An alloy of mercury, silver ,copper, and tin, which may also contain palladium , zinc and other element to improve handling characteristics.
•
it is a process of mixing of liquid mercury with one or more metals or alloys to form an amalgam mass .It may be manual or mechanical processing
•Function Of Each Elements:
•Silver
-The main component (63 - 72 % )
-Increase the corrosion resistance of the set dental amalgam
-Increases the strength
•Mercury
-(up to 3%) is added to the alloy
-The onlyliquid
•Tin
-About 26.8%
-Controls the reactionbetween silver and mercury [ withoutreaction too fast.
•
•Copper
- 0 - 6 % (low), 9 - 20 % or 13 - 33 % (high)
- Increases hardness and strength
- Increase the tarnish and corrosion liability
•Zinc
- 0 - 2 %
- improve the plasticity and workability of the amalgam mass.
- Alloys without zinc are more brittle, and amalgam formed by them are less plastic.
Platinum
-Hardens the alloy and increases resistance to corrosion.
Palladium
-Hardens and whitens the alloy
•Classification:
Based on Copper Content:
Low copper alloys : Contain less than 6%copper (conventional alloys)
High copper alloys : Contain more than 6% copper.
Basedon Zinc Content
Zinc-containing alloys: Contain more than 0.01% zinc
Zinc-free alloy: Contain less than 0.01% zinc
Based on Size of Alloy
Microcut
Macrocut
•Based on Number of Alloyed Metals
Binary alloys, e.g silver-tin
Ternary alloys, e.g silver-tin-copper
Quaternary alloys, e.g silver-tin-copper-indium.
•Based on Shape of the Alloy Particle
Lathe cut alloys-irregular shape
Spherical alloys
•ADVANTAGES:
•It's high compressive strength if it is properly manipulated.
•It's indestructibility in the oral fluids
•Have A good adaptation to the cavity walls and margins
•Posses A low thermal coefficient of expansion
•Not required expansive equipment orsensitive techniques
•Capability to give &maintain A good polished , smooth and lustrous surfaces if properly manipulated
•Easy in it's manipulation
•Cheap in relation to the other advanced materials
•DISADVANTAGES
•Posses unharmonious color
•Very low edge strength
•Non insulating.
•Non esthetic.
•Less conservative .
•Initial marginal leakage .
•Indication:
1-Moderate to large restoration
2- Restoration are not highly esthetic.
3- Heavy occlusion contact.
4-Restoration extend into the root surface.
5-Apecictomy.
•Contra indication:
1-Esthetically prominent area of posterior teeth.
2-Small Class. V restoration.
3- Mercury hazard
